What are eyelash extensions?

Eyelash extensions or lash extensions are a semi-permanent enhancement where a single lash extension or a lightweight handmade fan of lashes is adhered to each individual healthy eyelash. Extensions are available in a variety of widths, lengths, curl styles and colors for the perfect look. We use faux mink extensions, which keep their curl best and are virtually weightless for a comfortable experience. Your experienced professional PMU artist will select a design to showcase and flatter your eye shape and eyebrow arch placement while protecting the health of your natural lashes.

Am I a candidate for eyelash extensions?

A free consultation with one of our lash artists is the best way to learn whether this custom beauty treatment is right for you. You are probably a good candidate for lash extensions if:

  • Your eyes are free of any signs or symptoms of infection.
  • You have healthy natural lashes.
  • You are comfortable lying down for a few hours.
  • You want the look of fuller darker lashes but don’t want the hassle of putting on makeup daily.
  • You don’t wear a lot of eye makeup.

For some, lash extensions are not advised for a wide range of reasons, and our lash artists are happy to work with you to discuss this. You may not be a good candidate for lash extensions if:

  • You rub their eyes frequently, whether this is from allergies or out of habit.
  • You have highly sensitive skin; while we do carry a low-allergen adhesive, this service may cause greater reactions in certain candidates.
  • You’re experiencing symptoms of illness or currently have allergies; if you have a cold, sinus infection, bronchitis, flu or any other other illness, please stay home and get well! We can reschedule your appointment for a time when you are feeling well.
  • Your natural lashes are very curly. Unfortunately as your natural lash grows in, the extension will lay in an unnatural direction. This may be more irritating for you, and because of this excess “wear” on the lash, the extensions will not last as long. If you have recently had a lash lift, you may need to wait before getting lash extensions, so reach out to us to discuss this.
  • Your natural eye shape is too deep or your cheekbones are too high. To successfully apply new lash extensions, we need to be able to effectively isolate your lower lashes from your upper lashes.  This is not possible to do for some clients with deep-set eyes or high cheekbones. Don’t be discouraged if this applies to you! Our lash artists have extensive experience, if we can manage to safely get the upper and lower lashes separated, we’ll certainly apply your extensions. If you have concerns, our lash artists are happy to discuss this with you in greater detail.
  • You don’t have natural eyelashes or have a lot of gaps in your natural lashes. Our extensions are placed on a natural lash, and we need your natural lash to be healthy and strong enough to support an extension. Unlike other lash enhancement processes such as strips or flares, we cannot create lashes where there aren’t any.
  • You have an allergy to cyanoacrylate, which is the main ingredient used in the majority of lash extensions.
Will they damage my natural eyelashes?

When done properly, lash extensions in general should not damage your natural eyelashes. They should not pull or burn or itch, and you shouldn’t really feel them after they’ve been applied. It is important to note although we rely on established techniques when selecting the proper length and size of extensions that your natural lash can handle, it is not an exact science. If your lash artist ever feels like your extensions are causing your natural lashes any type of damage, we will let you know immediately. Please understand that if you’ve had long or heavy extensions applied by another salon, they will eventually cause damage to your natural lash and you might not be able to wear extensions any longer.

What are the longest, darkest lash extensions I can get?

In general, volume lash extensions are going to be the most dramatic but what your natural lash can handle is going to vary from client to client. As stated before, if not applied properly, lash extensions can damage your natural lashes. Longer lash extensions may also require more attentive lash extension care routines. At Beauty Elite, your health and safety are extremely important, and we’re not willing to sacrifice damaging your natural lashes permanently for the sake of a temporary look. With that being said, sometimes a client’s lashes can withstand a heavier set for a short period of time for a special occasion or a season and then the client can either take a break or do smaller in-fills to get back to a size that is more reasonable.

How long do they last?

On average we lose between 3-5 natural lashes a day, though we typically don’t notice them because they’re so small. However, when you are wearing lash extensions, you will become more aware of how many you are shedding. Don’t worry–it’s all part of the natural process our bodies go through on a regular basis. Most clients, depending on their natural growth cycle and lash extension care, and preferring a fuller lash line, schedule their touch-up appointments every 2 weeks to ensure a consistent appearance. Some of our clients have a slower natural lash growth cycle and can maintain their extensions with a fill every 3 weeks.

The work of retaining your lash extensions is split 50/50 between the client and lash spa artist. As with other treatments we provide, such as lip blush, eyeliner services, and PMU, it is our job to use the best products we can and ensure proper placement to get a good bond. It is your job to keep your lash extensions clean and to take care of them properly. If you allow your lashes to get dirty, debris can get between the extension and the natural lash and cause the extensions to pop off.  When it comes to eye makeup, mascara is a no-no, especially for volume lashes because it will close up your fans and they typically do not re-open. Your lash extensions may also be affected by sweat, oily skin, saunas, pools, hot yoga, travel–especially by plane–and similar conditions. Instead, some clients prefer our permanent eyeliner and powder brows services to enhance their eye makeup.

Are they waterproof?

Yes! You can shower and swim in them after the curing process, which is 24-48 hours. You want to avoid getting them wet for the first 24 hours, and avoid saturating them for 48 hours. What happens if you get them wet before 24 hours go by? The adhesive can “bloom” or cure too quickly, causing a brittle bond. Adhesive that gets wet before it cures may also increase in size and turn white or gray.

What is the application procedure like?

Getting lash extensions should be painless, gentle and relaxing. Many of our clients even drift off to sleep! When you lay back in preparation for your lash application, we will make sure your neck and back are comfortable and supported. You can expect your chin to be positioned up toward the lash artist so they can fully see your lash line. Eye pads will be applied to protect your lower lashes from getting stuck to your upper lashes. Then we prime your lashes to ensure there is a good bond, and we sometimes tape your eyelid up to give us the best view of your lashes. We typically don’t talk a lot during application, as it may cause your eyelids to move, your eyes to burn and make application more difficult.

How many extensions are used for each application?

This depends on how many natural lashes you have on each eye. Though we do not count how many extensions we apply per eye, it typically averages 90-120 lash extensions per eye. Please keep in mind that everyone’s lashes are different–clients may have baby-fine, coarse, straight or curly lashes–which can determine the total number of lashes applied. In all cases, you can be assured that we always meticulously isolate each individual healthy eyelash hair for one extension.

How long is a lash extension care appointment?

Appointment times depend on your service, the experience of your lash artist, your previous lash extension care, and the number of days it has been since your most recent eyelash appointment.

I have a special occasion coming up. When should I get my lashes applied?

We suggest your initial set should be applied at least 2-3 weeks prior to your event, with a perfection session (fill-in) scheduled 2-3 days prior to your event. Nothing ruins a wedding or other special event like an allergic reaction that causes your eyes to swell up! By planning your appointment in advance, we will also be able to accommodate any adjustments to the appearance of your lashes, including curl, length, volume or shape. If you plan on additional services for your special event that will require lip blush care, a visit to our powder brow bar or PMU removal, let us know so we can help address your needs.

I’m currently wearing another salon’s lashes. May I schedule a fill-in with you?

At Beauty Elite, we have extremely high expectations for the quality and safety of the materials and tools we use for your lash and brow care, permanent makeup and microneedling services. We demonstrate an exceptional level of execution in our applications and use only premium products to achieve beautiful results. We love doing your lashes as much as you love your lashes. We strive to give you the best results and this can only be ensured if we do all of the work ourselves. As a general rule of thumb, we do not fill in lashes done by other artists at other salons, since we cannot account for their products or their techniques. Exceptions are extremely limited, and typically only for other lash artists we know and have agreed to provide coverage for in cases of their extended leave. Please reach out to us if you have further questions about lash extensions, and we would be happy to discuss them with you.
